ABOUT SAN DIEGO 30X30
Collective action is key to protecting the huge variety of natural wonders that San Diego has to offer. Together, we can protect biodiversity, take real action on climate, and create equity by conserving San Diego’s lands and waters for future generations.
The statewide California 30×30 effort was launched with Governor Newsom’s Executive Order N-82-20, which called for a plan to protect 30% of California’s land and coastal waters by 2030. The goal aligns with a climate-science driven global 30×30 campaign to protect nature all around the world to avoid an extinction crisis.
Home to more than 200 threatened plants and animals, San Diego County contains more imperiled species than any other county in the country. Protecting San Diego’s natural areas is critical to safeguarding biodiversity and fighting climate change on a local and international scale – and to achieving the California 30×30 goal.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to protect San Diego’s unique biodiversity, expand equitable access to nature and its benefits, and conserve places that help our region achieve carbon neutrality and build climate resilience.
BIODIVERSITY
Protect San Diego’s unique and endangered plant and animal species, including mountain lions, bighorn sheep, coastal birds like the short-tailed albatross, and more.
ACCESS
Create more access to nature for all San Diegans—especially for historically marginalized communities and communities of color – and expand recreational opportunities in natural areas.
CLIMATE RESILIENCE
Protect natural areas that will help buffer the worsening impacts of climate change. Conserving lands and waters is especially important to help plant and animal life recover from droughts, extreme temperatures, and wildfires.

WHY 30X30?
Scientists say protecting 30% of our land and coastal waters by 2030 can protect and restore California’s natural places for plants and animals, help keep our ocean clean, and restore needed balance to our environment.
An overwhelming number of Californians support this goal. Now, we need to work together to take regional action—and leverage this moment to foster more equitable access to nature in San Diego, as well as the benefits of climate resilience and biodiversity.
Our broad strategic approach seeks to achieve these goals through a variety of actions, from improving current management of conserved lands to strengthening coordination among governments to expand environmental conservation and restoration.
WHO WE ARE
From vast beaches to golden hills, San Diego has a lot to protect – which is why we need a lot of us to protect it. Our coalition includes community groups, conservation organizations, land trusts, and Native American Tribes across the region working hard to protect San Diego’s lands and waters so future generations can enjoy nature.
